Is Guan Yin an Idol?

Maria Reis Habito tells a personal story published in the Buddhist Christian Journal (1993, University of Hawaii Press) about how she was raised in a Roman Catholic family. Then as a young woman she went to Taiwan to study Chinese. She was taken to a countryside Buddhist temple and taken before a small altar. Her friend bowed before Guan Yin. Maria was asked to do the same. “Oh no!” she said, “I was taught not to bow before idols.” The priest kindly said to her, “This is not an idol. This is you.”
